Student Essentials: Apps To Make University Life Easier

When it comes to university life, our phones can be a great tool if used wisely. There are plenty of apps available to help us stay on top of our revision, timetable our studies and manage our health, mindfulness and finances. Here are some of the most useful apps to help manage life at uni.

Studying

MyStudyLife (available on IOS and Android for free) is a fantastic app for making detailed timetables. It can repeat schedules on a weekly basis, break down tasks and create to-do lists. Plus, it works offline too, so if you’re in an area with limited signal, you can still access your schedule.

Wunderlist (available on IOS, Android and Windows) is perfect for creating endless to-do lists for project deadlines, assignments, lectures, and more. You can easily share the lists with other Wunderlist users, making it a great tool for sharing shopping lists between housemates, or breaking down shared project work.

Offtime (available on Android for free) is a digital detoxer that’s great for those times when you have a big deadline approaching. It blocks your calls, texts and notifications, restricts access to any apps and even limits your phone usage so you can stay focused. You can make exceptions for the people important to you, or even send out custom auto-replies to let others know when you’re back online.

SoundNote (available on IOS for £3.96) is perfect for taking notes during lectures. It tracks what you type or draw and records audio at the same time. When playing back your recording, you can simply tap on a word and SoundNote will jump to that exact point in the audio recording.

Revision and essays

GoConqr (available on IOS and Android for free) is an app that converts your notes into mind maps, flashcards, quizzes, and slides.

EasyBib (available on IOS and Android for free) is a fantastic app for referencing sources with ease. You can scan a book’s barcode for easy referencing, which is particularly useful for dissertation writing. You can also select the citation style required by your tutors.

Sharing a house or flat

Chorma (available on IOS for free) is perfect for splitting up household chores with your flatmates.

Sortly (available on IOS and Android for free for first 100 items) allows you to make a personal inventory by snapping pictures and recording any valuable items you might have. You can even record their serial numbers, which is especially helpful if anything should get stolen or broken.

Splitwise (available on IOS and Android for free) helps keep track of shared household costs, making it easy to pay bills or even just shared meals and birthday presents without getting into arguments.

White Noise (available on IOS and Android for free) is ideal for those living in noisy flats. With 40 different sounds, including rushing water and waves, spa music and much more, it’s designed to block out interruptions and help you fall asleep. Better still, you don’t need to be online to listen.

Life skills

Alarmy (available on IOS and Android for free) offers a range of options to ensure that you’re awake. You can choose to solve a (relatively easy) puzzle or math question to turn off the alarm. Alternatively, Alarmy can be set up so that you must get out of bed and take a picture of a registered place, such a sink on the other side of the room, to switch off the alarm.

Citymapper (available on IOS, Android, and the web for free) combines maps with live travel information for buses, Tubes, trains, ferries, trams and cycling dock stations in most major cities.

Unroll.me (available on IOS, Android and the web for free) creates a list of every mailing list you’re subscribed to, making it easy to remove any you don’t want. The app combines all of the newsletters you do want into one digest email, so you avoid lots of interruptions on your phone every day.

Budgeting

Stampuno (available on IOS and Android for free) digitizes loyalty cards, working with hundreds of loyalty programs, including big ones like Clubcard and Nectar. This app stores your card details, so you don’t need to keep them in your wallet.

Spending Tracker (available on IOS and Android for free) is a budgeting app that tracks your spending, turning your finances into graphs that highlight where your cash is going each month. Moreover, this app reminds you to pay bills and waves a red flag when you’re overspending.

Goodbudget (available on IOS, Android, and the web for free) transfers cash into different "envelopes" for various purposes. You can check the envelope balances, sync with bank accounts and other devices, and track expenses. So, this app is ideal for budgeting with a partner or housemates.
